On Monday, the healthcare sector in Delhi experienced significant disruptions as over 5,000 resident doctors initiated a strike in response to the tragic rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata. This protest affected major hospitals such as AIIMS, Safdarjung, and Ram Manohar Lohia (RML), and extended to emergency services as well.
Hospital Disruptions:
- AIIMS Delhi: Handling around 10,000 patients daily in its OPD, AIIMS saw a sharp decline in both OPD registrations and emergency admissions, down by 65-70%. Surgical operations were limited to only the most critical and elective cases.
- Safdarjung Hospital: Approximately 1,500 resident doctors joined the strike, leading to the postponement of elective surgeries and a temporary suspension of OPD services.
- RML Hospital: Around 300-400 resident doctors refrained from participating in OPD services, although emergency care continued without interruption.
- Lok Nayak Hospital: OPD services were halted, but emergency services remained operational.
The striking doctors are calling for an investigation by a central agency and a judicial inquiry into the case. The AIIMS Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) has been actively advocating for justice and improved safety measures for medical staff.
Details on the Accused:
Sanjoy Roy, the suspect in the case, was a civic volunteer with Kolkata Police rather than a formal hospital staff member. Although he was not officially employed by the hospital, Roy had frequent access to the hospital premises. He had been involved in various activities on campus and reportedly engaged in unethical practices, such as extorting patients for admissions.
Roy, who presented himself as a police officer, was recognized by his KP-branded attire and vehicle. CCTV footage showed him entering the emergency building early on Friday morning, with evidence linking him to the crime scene. Roy admitted to the crime during questioning and has been detained until August 23.
This tragic event has led to nationwide protests and intense scrutiny of hospital security protocols. The principal of RG Kar Medical College has resigned, and there are growing calls for improved safety measures to protect medical professionals. The ongoing strike underscores the urgent need for justice and enhanced security in healthcare environments.
